Education plays an important role in the development of any nation. Therefore, ORAP supports the education of children and youths in our operational areas. This support takes the form of stocking libraries in rural schools with books, promoting the re-integration of out of school learners and vocational training at ORAP centres where they are available.
For the past 10 years ORAP in partnership with USACF have been implementing schools development programme focusing on resource mobilisation and management, capacity building and sports development interventions in the 19 districts across four provinces of Zimbabwe. The districts covered in Bulawayo Metropolitan are Reigate, Mzilikazi, Khami and Imbizo Districts. The districts covered in Matabeleland North are Binga, Bubi, Hwange, Lupane, Nkayi, Tsholotsho and Umguza Rural Districts, in Matabeleland South Bulilima, Gwanda, Insiza, Matobo and Umzingwane Districts and in Midlands covering Gokwe, Kwekwe and Vungu Districts. A total of 294 schools; 239 and 55 primary and secondary schools respectively have been reached since the inception of the programme benefiting over 130 000 pupils.
ORAP and Chevrolet host a soccer tournament titled the “ORAP-Zenzele Chevrolet Champions Cup “annually. The Cup is an under 20 tournament that began in 2014 and its primary aim is to empower and inspire young people to see sport as more than just a recreation but as a tool for development. The tournament aims to give back to young people and the community through sport and to give the youth an opportunity to engage in positive activities in a healthy environment. It started in 2014 and this year we held the 4thedition where Tsholotsho High School took the boys’ championship and Muzimoni High School from Gwanda took the girls’ championship. – (let’s add links to the stories for each year, then put annual tournament reports in the blog and link them here too)
